Taste testing new local products, like the New York State Grown & Certified Concord Grape Juice, creates a low-pressure environment for both students and food service staff to promote a school culture of food curiosity and ultimately expand their school lunch menu. By offering smaller portions of new and potential menu items, taste tests increase the likelihood that students will try something new.
Westfield Maid Cooperative is one of the oldest concord grape marketing cooperatives headquartered in the Lake Erie Grape Growing Region. The cooperative enjoys a rich heritage of hard work, persistence, and great value. This farmer owned organization was founded in 1935 and has partnered with Direct Refreshments to create the New York Juice Company.
Shortly after the conclusion of World War II, in 1946, the cooperative refocused its mission exclusively to concord grape marketing. Today, the cooperative consists of over 70 family owned farms with a total average annual production of more than 10,000 tons of high quality concord grapes.
New York is one of the largest concord grape-growing regions in the world. New York's concord grape belt is the third largest producing region in the United States.
